Diwali is a very important festival in India . People celebrate this festival with great enthusiasm . It is the festival of lights that removes darkness of pains and stress from our lives and brings the light of happiness and cheers in our lives . Many legends are associated with the Diwali Celebration .

 

Lord Rama return to Ayodhya : The most well known legend associated with the Diwali Celebration is Lord Rama. In Hindu mythology, it is said that on the day of Diwali, Lord Rama returned to his state Ayodhya after the exile of fourteen years. According to the epic Ramayana, Lord Rama along with her wife Sita and younger brother Laxman returned to Ayodhya after conquering Lanka and killing the demon king Ravana. The people of Ayodhya after hearing the news of the arrival of their most beloved prince decorated the whole state with flowers. They lit the lamps everywhere in the state to welcome them. The whole Ayodhya was looking like the sky full of stars at that time. People got filled with enthusiasm to see Rama back in the state after a long wait of fourteen years. According to the Epic Lord Rama arrived Ayodhya on the new moon night of Kartik month of Hindu calendar. Since then every year on the new moon night of Kartik month, Diwali is celebrated with the same enthusiasm and in the same manner. People decorate their houses with flowers and other decorative items and do lighting all around their houses with earthen lamps, candles and electric bulbs. People also fire crackers.

Incarnation of Goddess Laxmi : It is believed that Goddess Laxmi incarnated on this day during the Samudra Manthan (churning) done by both demons and Gods. That was the very popular event of Hindu mythology. Therefore Laxmi pooja is performed on Diwali to please her and get her blessings.

 

Rescue of Goddess Lakshmi by Lord Vishnu : On this day Lord Vishnu rescued her from the imprisonment of demon king Bali. Actually Bali had conquered the whole three worlds, the Earth, the swarga (the Kingdom of Gods) and also Pataal. Then in order to rescue the whole world from the demons Lord Vishnu took his fifth incarnation, the Vamana Avatar, and went to Bali and asked Bali for a promise of some donation to him that he made to Vamana Avatar happily, then the vamana Avatar asked him to give only three footsteps of land and Bali then asked him measure three steps of land. Then Vamana Avatar Vishnu Increased his size to such an extent that he measured all the three worlds in the two steps and put his third step on demon king's head and rescued the three world and their subjects gods and human from the Demons. This is another reason of celebration of Diwali and also of Lakshmi pujan on Diwali.

 

Killing of Narakasur by Lord Krishna : on the day before Diwali, Lord Krishna rescued sixteen thousand women from the captivity of Narakasur and killed him. Then the victory and freedom of the women was celebrated for two days. Since then Diwali is also celebrated as the victory celebration of Lord Krishna over Narakasur.

 

The return of Pandavas : According to the great epic Mahabharata, the Kaurvas invited Pandavas in their palace for playing the game of gambling in which they lost their everything and had to go for the exile of twelve years. According to Mahabharata, they returned after the exile of twelve years on this day (the new moon day of Kartik month ). The subject of their state celebrated the day by lighting the earthen lamps in the whole state. Coronation of Vikramaditya: Vikramaditya was one of the greatest kings of Hindus.
