King Bali was very well known for his charity. Once lord Vishnu thought to test his charity. He converted himself into a vaman man. Vamans are very tiny sized persons. Presently you might have seen some one in picture / cinema performing the role of jocker just to make people laught. It is said that vaman man’s height remain’s to be equal to the height measurable with fifty two fingers. Fifty two means Bawan in Hindi. Thus a man of Bawan Anguli (fingers) height is called Bouna or Baman or vaman. So according to the legend lord Vishnu became a Vaman Pandit and went to the Darbar of King Bali. King Bali as per his nature asked the Brahmin to demand anything he liked to have. The vaman Brahmin who was in actual the lord Vishnu asked for a piece of land just equal to his three steps-- means land measured by three feet. King Bali smiled to hear his demand and promised to give him three feet land. Brahmin (Vaman) was not an ordinary Brahmin - he was Lord Vishnu.
When he put his first step - the whole earth was covered. In the second step he measured the whole sky. For third step Vaman Brahmin asked Bali as to where he should put his third step. Kind Bali offered his head. As soon as Lord Vishnu put his foot on the head of Bali, he went to Patal-lok with the weight of feet. At this Lord Vishnu appeared and asked King Bali for a boon. since Bali was in Patallok (the world beneath this earth) thus he desired that Lord Vishnu would be on every door of Patal-lok. Vishnu agreed for it. Rishi Narda told the whole story to the goodess Luxmi - the wife of Lord Vishnu. On haring all this Luxmi became so much worried and thought of a plan to get her husband back. Now Goddess Luxmi converted herself into a poor woman and went to King Bali requesting him to be her brother as she is not having any brother and has a great desire to be the sister of a brother.
Bali accepted her request and asked her to demand anything from him whatever she wanted to have. On this, Goddess Luxmi asked Bali that he may release Lord Vishnu (her husband) from his service. The day on which Bali released Lord Vishnu was the same day of Kartik Shukla Dwitya. And since then it is told that brothers like to fullfill the long cherised desires of their sisters. Now it has took the shape of gifts presented by the brothers to pamper their sisters on the day of Bhaidooj.
