Thus one day all the deities of heaven went to Lord Vishnu and requested for help. The king Bali was also known for his charity .Who so ever demanded anything from the king he fulfilled his demand without any hesitation. Taking advantage of his said sence of charity Lord Vishnu took the incarnation of Vamana (dwarf) and bagged for a piece of land just equal to three steps measurement. As king Bali was very much famous for his philanthropy he readily agreed to the request made by the dwarf. At this Lord Vishnu came into his real from and started to measure the land with his steps. In the first step he measured the heaven in the second step he measured the whole earth and the third step Lord Vishnu put on the head of King Bali and resultantly King Bali went to underground . But at the same time Lord Vishnu was so much impressed with the King Bali's action that he asked the King to demand something.King Bali requested Lord Vishnu that he be given such a blessing in the welfare of mankind that who so ever will lit lamps on these three days will never feel the scarcity of money. The godess of wealth will remain with him always. And the persons who will lit lanps on the day of Chaturdashi will never be tourtures by the god of death---Yam. At that time Narkasur was ruling over Pragjyotishpur of Nepal. He was acquiring power day by day and creating fear in the hearts of deities. Thus all the deities jointly went to Lord Vishnu and requested for help. Lord Vishnu in the incarnation of Krishna at that time were busy with his wife Satyabhame. Satyabhama requested to accompany Lord Krishna and she was taken to the battle field by lord Krishna. to the battle field by lord Krishna. On reaching there Satyabhama came to know that Narkasur has imprisoned the deities mother Aditi who was a relative of Satyabhama also. Satyabhama alos came to know that Narkasur has snatched the year rings of mother Aditi . On hearing this Satyabhama lost her tamper , requested Lord Krishna to empower her and empowered by Krishna Satyabhama killed the devil Narkasur by beheading him. When Narkasur was murdered the fountain of blood splinted on the forehead of Krishana. For which Krishana has to take an oil bath. And since then, the oil bath is being taken by Hindus on the day before Diwali as a tradition.
According to another story-the Narkasur the devil of filth and dust after becoming so much powerfull threatened Indra and imprisioned sixteen thousands daughters of deities. All were rescued by Krishana after defeating him in fight and killing him. And all the sixteen thousand girls were given the status of wives of Lord Krishana. Thus it is symbolic to be a victory of good over evil and Hindus celebrate it all over the country.
Now we will take you to the another stage in the same point of time. In Dwaper yug itself residents of Gokul used to worship god Indra for rains every year. But Krishna persuaded them to worship mountain Goverdhan as mountain's green grass was used by the villagers as feeder to their cows. And the area adjoining to mountain was so rich that good harvests were cultivated in that area by the residents of Gokul. Thus Krishna pleaded that mountain Govverdhan is more important and villagers agreed to worship Goverdhan. That year Goverdhan was worshiped instead of God Inder. Ultimately, Indra become angry and started thundering and raining torrentially. Days passed but rain was not in amood to stop. Ultimately, water started to enter in the houses of residents of Gokul. On seeing this Krishna uplift Goverdhan on his little finger and told all the villagers to come under the roof created by uplifting mountain.
