Diwali in Karnataka

 

Diwali is an important and festival of the people of Karnataka. It is a festival of wealth and prosperity. This festival is celebrated for five days :

 

The First Day of Diwali is known as ‘ Asweyuja Bahula Thrayodasi’ or ‘Dhanatrayodashi’ or ‘ Yamadeepdaan’ . On this day people buy new utensils and other gold and silver items. This festival is also known as Dhantrayodashi. In this festival a special ritual is performed which is cleed Deepdan. Every person in the family lit one lamp and these lamps are floated in a river or a pond.

 

The Second Day of Diwali is known as ‘ Narkachaturdashi’ . God yama is worshipped on this day to get rid of the fear from Demon Narakasura. People of Karnataka make a paper model of Narkasura and burnt it . Agrerwards they dad bath and burst crackers.

 

The Third Day of Diwali is known as ‘ Kamudi Mahostavam’ or ‘ Balindra Pooja’, or ‘ Karthidai Deepam ‘ or ‘ Thalai Deepavali’ . There is an mythological story about this festival . Their was an Emperor named Bali who became so powerful God Vishnu is said to have come to earth in form of a short Brahmin(The Vamana Avatar) and present himself before the king Bali and asked for as much land to give as three of this footsteps would cover King Bali agreed him. The Brahmin covered the heavens in one step and the world in second step. He asked King Bali where he should take his third step King Bali bowed before him and offered his own head to place third foot on it. God Vishnu who was in form of short Brahmin puthis third step on his head. God Vishnu became happy and blessed him. People wear new clothes and sweet dishes are being prepared on this day. People distributed sweets and gifts on this day. The children burst fire crackers on this day.

 

 

The Forth Day of Diwali is known as’ Bali Padyam’ or’ Bali Pratipada’.In karnataka this day is celebrated as Bali Paadyami or Bali Pratipada.On this day demon King Bali came to earth with his subjects.

 

The Fifth Day of Diwali is known as ‘ Yamaduritheya’ or ‘Bhatree Durithiya ‘ . One more festival is celebrated in Karnataka which is known as ‘ Gorehabba’.

 

This festival is celebrated by a remote village of Karnataka. This festival fills joy and enthusiasm in the life of the people. On this day the villagers start playing with the crowding and some rituals are also performed on this festival.
