Diwali in Gujarat

 

Diwali is one of the famous festival of the people of Gujarat. Before one month they start preparing for this festival. The markets of Gujarat are full swing. Every businessman wants to earn more profit so they keep best item in their shops. Special discount and others offers are given to customers in order to increase more profits.

 

Diwali in Gujarat is celebrated for five days.

The First Day of Diwali is popularly known as ‘ Dhanteras’. On this day people buy kitchen utensils and other gold and silver items. They keep new kitchen utensils in the place of worship. At night the women of the houses make on deva of kneaded floar and lit diva in front of door of the house and worshipped Goddess Lakshmi to enter their house with wealth prosperity and happiness.

 

The Second Day of Diwali is called’ Kali Choudas’. On this day a head wash is necessary and apply of Kajal in the eyes of every person is believed to keep away from kali nazar i.e. evil eye

 

The Third Day of Diwali is known as ‘ Chopda Pujan ‘ or ‘Deva Divali’ or ‘Badhasur’. During Chopda Pujan all businessmen settled their old accounts and present them to God Ganesha and Goddess Lakshmi . This day is also called ‘Deva Divali’ because Lord Mahavira is worshipped by Jainism on this day . They decorated their homes and temples. In Gujarat this day is popularly known as ‘Badhasur’ because people believed that Goddess Lakshmi enters only those houses who are well lit. So people decorate their houses with fancy lights, flowers and paper chain. The markets of Gujarat are in full swing on month in advance for Diwali shippers. Every item either its jewellery or clothes or other household items or business items, or Gifts items everything is in proper supply for the customers. On this day people wear new clothes. Early in the morning the women of the houses make colorful rangoli of different patterns in the doorway and courtyard. In Gujarat ‘Rangoli’ is a symbol of welcoming ‘Goddess Lakshmi’ to their house. People also draw footprints with rice floar and vermillion powder all over the houses.

 

 

The Fourth Day of Diwali is known as ‘Bestavarsh’ or ‘Gudi Padeva’ or ‘ Muharat Pujan. This day is celebrated as ‘New Year’ for the people of Gujarat. People celebrate this day by wearing new clothes and visiting to their family members and friends. They exchanged sweets and gifts with their relatives and friends on this day.

 

The Fifth Day of Diwali is known as ‘Bhaubeej’or ‘Bhatree Dwithiya’. Bhatru Dwithiya is an important festival of Hindus. This festival is dedicated to the purest bond shared between brothers and sisters. Many customs are followed on this day.
