Diwali is an important festival of the Delhi cites. Their festival starts from dushera from this day onwards the people remain busy in shopping, white-washing their houses, decorating their homes and shops. In order to promote market, shopkeepers and businessmen give special discount and other offers to the customers. Market places are in full swing. Melas and Fairs are also organized.
Diwali in Delhi is celebrated for five days.
The First Day of Diwali is popularly known as ‘ Dhanters’ .On the day of Dhanteras people buy new utesenils of kitchen and keep them in the place of worship. At evening they lit one Diva in place of worship and pray to Goddess Laxmi to fulfill their house with luxury and happiness. At night they put that diva near the doorway of the house.
The Second Day of Diwali is known as’ Choti Diwali’ or ‘Roop Chaturdashi’.On this day people lighted their houses with illumines. Bulbs and fancy lights. The children burst crackers also on this day. At night eleven divas are lit in and around the house in order to welcome goddess Laxmi. On this day some people takes a ritual bath and do meditation to gain beauty and magnetism. Believing remarkable sales ahead. & the businessmen opens their shops till late night. In pash areas of Delhi , the procedure of buying and distributing gifts starts many days before Diwali Sweets, Dry fruits, Gold and Silver coins, and many others , house hold items are included in gifts.
The Third Day of Diwali is known as Laxmi Pujan or ‘Bandi Chhor Diwas’. In the morning the women of the houses cleaned and decorated their houses as well as puja room. Sweets and other dishes are made on this day. People wear new clothes.At night people worshipped God Ganesh, Goddess Laxmi and other Gods and Goddesses. Bhakti or Religious songs and aarties are sung while praying. Oils and Aghee dias are also lit in front of the picture or statues of their Gods. The gods are offered kheel, khilone, batashe, ladoos and other sweet dishes in order to please them. After completing puja diyas are placed in and around the house, on the doorway, in every room, in front and back of the gate, near the Tulsi plant and in temple also. Children burst crackers and people meet their friends and relatives and greet them their best wishes.
The Fourth Day of Diwali is known as ‘ Goverdhan Puja’ or ‘Annakoot’. On this day the women of the houses make Goverdahn made from cowdung, tumeric powder and floar in front of the house. At night all members of the family worship goverdhan and make seven rounds of the Goverdhan. In afternoon ‘ Annakoot’ is being prepared in every home.Annakoot is a dish which is made from mixed vegetables. Besides Annakoot Curry and Bajara is also made on this day.
The Fifth Day of Diwali is known ad ‘ Bhai Dooj’ . Onthis day sisters go to their brothers houses and put tikka on the foreheads of their brothers and pray to God for their long lives and prosperity. In return brothers promised their sisters to help them always. They also give money and other gifts to their sisters.
