Diwali in Assam

 

Assam is one of the largest state of North - East of India. It's capital is Guwahati which lies on the banks of the River Brahmaputra. Assam state is famous for tea plantation and wild sanctuaries. Diwali is an important festival of Assam.

 

It is celebrated for five days.

 

The First Day of Diwali is known as 'Dhanteras' or Yamadeepdaan'. On this day people keep fast and they worship Goddess Laxmi by lightning an earthen lamp on the main entrance of the house and offering water, Vermilion, rice, jaggery and flowers to Yamaraj. Some people lit of Assam for every member and they float in the river or pond.

 

The Second Day of Diwali is known as 'Roop Chaturdashi' or 'Mahanisha' Or 'Kali Puja . On this day people takes a ritual bath and do meditation to gain beauty and magnetism. This festival is also known as ' Mahanisha' or ' Kali Puja'. The people believed that Goddess Maha Kali appeared on this day with 64000 yoginis.

 

The Third Day of Diwali is known as ' Laxmi Pujan',or 'Chopda Pujan or 'Sharda Pujan' . The women of the houses cleaned and decorated their houses and shps. Goddess Laxmi is worshipped on this day and the women in the family do aarti 'of her husband and pray for long life. In Chopda Pujan all businessmen closed their accounts and present then to Goddess Laxmi and God Ganesh. This festival is also known as 'Sharda Pujan. In order to gain success in business & businessmen do pujan of their ledgers on this day. The state is decorated fully with lights and lamps. Beautiful lams are hung outside the houses. Doorways are decorated with torans or flower garlands with mango leaves. Rangolis are drawn with coloured powders to welcome guests children burst crackers. .The people distribute sweets and gifts to their relatives and friends.

 

 

 

The Fourth Day of Diwali is known as ‘ Muharat Pujan’ . On this day all businessmen start their new projects and establishments and their families perform pujan of their books.

 

The Fifth Day of Diwali is known as’ Bhai Dooj’. This festival is dedicated to the purest bond shared between brothers and sisters. The people enjoy this festival with great zest and spirit.
