Diwali is the festival of emotions. We express our emotions very well. This is the trait of us Hindus. So we exchange gifts with each other on this occasion. Tradition of exchanging gifts is as old as the Diwali celebration. From the time of its inception we have been giving gifts to our dears and near. This tradition is very important in Diwali celebration. Even the merchants encase this tradition. Knowing the value of this tradition,they launch or introduce new products in the market on this occasion. This is the treated as the golden opportunity by merchants as they can earn as much money on this occasion as they earn in whole year. People are willing to spend money and want to buy new things for their homes, and themselves. On Diwali everybody wants to do shopping in accordance of their financial strength.Exchanging gifts with friends and relatives also has social impact. These improve our relations and strengthen the bonds we have with our relations. Giving gifts means how much you care about somebody. By giving gifts we give blessings, love and respect to others. This is a way of appreciating someone. Even the merchants give gifts to their employees to appreciate them. Merchants give gifts to other merchants to maintain good rapport with them.
In the older days too people used to exchange gifts with others. But at that time people were not able to spend so much money therefore they used to give self made gifts to others. They used to give home made sweets, dresses and home made articles of decoration and statues of deities. People didn't give value to the cost or worth of gifts but they used to give plenty of value to the emotions and love attached with the gifts. Gifts were considered as the symbol of respect and love people owed others.
Now-days this tradition of exchanging gifts has become more significant in Diwali celebration. Unknowingly, it has become somewhat necessary. People spend their most of time and money in giving gifts to friends and relatives. The gift has a broader variety in the market. People give Chocolate packs instead of sweets of Halwai as the food habits of modern people has changed. Some people give clothes to others. There are too many types of items available that can be gifted.
People can gift home decoration items, crockery etc. But the most important gift is the silver and gold coins engraved with the images of Godess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha. These coins are considered very auspicious and have great importance as gifts. People also give dry fruit packed in fancy trays to their relatives. As an extract these gifts of Diwali have big impacts on our social lives.
