The concept behind this, beautiful festival is to strengthen the affectionate relationship between brothers and sisters. Although way of celebration differs from state to state yet main theme is to revive the value of relations, which is of much importance in Indian Society. Thus in the chain of Diwali celebrations for the five days, Bhai Dooj falls on the third day of Diwali. Since Diwali is celebrated on Amavasya - the moon less night. After Amavasya new moon circle starts. The first day of this moon circle is called Padva in other words first day and the second day is called Dwitiya - a Sanskrit word used for second. This Dwitiya in Sanskrit is Dooj in Punjabi and Avadhi Hindi. Thus celebrations celebrated by sisters on the second day of new moon for the well being of their brothers are called Bhai Dooj.
